BRIGHT FUTURES HOME VISITATION PROGRAM

Bright Futures HOME VISITATION will provide early childhood education services to children prenatal to three years of age, education services to their parents, and ongoing staff training to the early childhood educators involved with the program.

The program is designed to assist children with early language development, social and emotional development, and equip parents with the skills and knowledge to successfully support their child's growth. The result will be a strong foundation of learning for the child which will prepare him/her for success in school.

By understanding what to expect during each stage of development, parents can easily capture the teachable moments in everyday life to enhance their child's language development, intellectual growth, social development and motor skills. Families enrolled will receive:

• Personal home visits — during which parent educators individualize each session to share age-appropriate child development and parenting information, help parents learn to observe their child and address any parenting concerns.

• Screenings — to assess a child's overall development, as well as health, hearing and vision.

• Resource network — that links families to other community services

• Monthly family socialization — these monthly gatherings will allow families to meet and learn from each other. Family to family interaction is one of the most effective parenting tools we possess.

Through the Sixpence Program we provide a parent educator to help families understand the when, what, how and why of child development.

• Home Visitation serves families with infants and toddlers (birth to age three) who are most at risk of failure in school. "At risk" is defined as:

• Children (birth to age 3) whose family income would qualify them for participation in the federal free or reduced lunch program;

• Children (birth to age 3) who were born prematurely or at low birth weight as verified by a physician;

• Children (birth to age 3) who reside in a home where a language other than spoken English is used as the primary means of communication;

• Children (birth to age 3) whose parents are younger than 20 years of age at the time of enrollment;

• Children (birth to age 3) whose parents have not completed high school;

• Children (birth to age 3) whose parents are incarcerated.

There are many additional factors that cause infants and toddlers to be considered "at risk"; however, applicants must indicate one or more of the above criteria.
